HiPPO isn’t an evil dictator
Part 12 of 12 in Hidden truths of corporate innovation

The Highest Paid Person’s Opinion (HiPPO) appears when decisions default to the highest-ranking person’s opinion —regardless of data or expertise.
And the HiPPO is blamed for killing innovation.
The truth?
HiPPO isn't an evil dictator—it's a cultural symptom.
It's a symptom of valuing hierarchy over evidence.
Beyond "blaming the boss", the root cause lies in the culture:
Teams will assume:
- If the boss said it, it must be right
- The boss has more relevant and undisclosed information
- Our data must be wrong if it conflicts
As a result, you get:
- Withheld insights
- Data dismissed for intuition
- Silence misread as consensus
- Harmony rewarded over truth
How to neutralize the HiPPO power?
Fix the Culture, Not the Person
Here are 4 actionable strategies:
1. Leaders listen first, speak last in meetings
Going around the table ensures all perspectives are heard.
Simon Sinek's "Leaders Eat Last" explains that in the Marine Corps:
“When leaders prioritize their people over their own comfort, they create environments where trust flourishes and teams perform at their highest capacity.”
2. Link insights to direct business value
- “This could lead to $__ revenue lift”
- “Ignoring this risks __% customer churn”
Test: “If you can’t tie it to business value—does it matter?”
3. Intellectual Honesty Checklist
“The biggest threat to good decision-making is harmful emotions.” - Ray Dalio
Propose a checklist for leaders to identify bias:
- What assumptions drive this decision?
- What data are we ignoring?
- How will we explain this if it fails in 6 months?
4. “Thinking Out Loud” Validation
Before deciding, leaders share with the team:
“Here’s my thinking”
“Here’s the data I’m weighing”
“Here’s where I’m uncertain”
When leaders expose their logic, they don’t weaken authority—they strengthen trust.
